What a glorious vacation. Our whole family, away together for rest and relaxation. The grandchildren, not only keeping everyone on their toes, but providing hours of entertainment for all of the adults in the group.

What to choose? The lazy river? The lounge chair poolside? Or the one near the shore? Lunch at noon or one or two? Coke or diet Coke? Sun or shade?

“Let’s go for a walk,” cries my granddaughter ,Sharon. So atop Grandpa’s shoulders, we take off for a stroll through the chest deep pools, moving from one area to another. “Watch your head,” I call as we pass under a foot bridge. Grandpa bends down slightly to make sure Sharon’s head doesn’t hit. “Sharon, you’d better hold on to Grandpa’s head.”

“I don’t have to, Grandma. Grandpa’s got hold of me!” And with all of the confidence and assuredness that she was being taken care of, we continued with our walk through the pools.

“He’s got a hold of me.” What a simple picture that even a four-year-old can grasp. If Grandpa has hold of me, nothing can harm me that he can’t take care of. And with all of the human power, that is absolutely true. Grandpa would fight dragons and fire to keep Sharon safe.

So much more is God taking hold of us. When we responded to God’s gift of eternal life in faith, he took hold of us, not the opposite way around. Our grasp wouldn’t be worth its weight. But God’s grip is firm and sure. John 10:29, “My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.” He got hold of us. 

What does that mean for you today? God has a hold of you and he isn’t letting go. What can you say and do today relying on that confidence?
